Mixer Stress Test

Posted by chanxj on 06 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

One reason I have always loved Mackie mixers can be seen from this video. Its a pity brand Y didn’t survived though as I also like it as much as Mackie. I personally never even trust brand B ever though. :)

note: any people who do enough live sound will be able to figure out what brands they are talking abt. Brand A is a giveaway though.

A Tip for Minimizing Audio Feedback

Posted by chanxj on 03 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Live Sound, Music, The A Cappella Scene

Many times people ask me how can one minimise feedback in a live sound scenario. There is one thing which many people including me constantly overlook.

I was mixing at The A Cappella Festival organised by The A Cappella Society, and was wondering why was I getting so much feedback, and I finally found out what was causing the trouble.

See that red arrow in the picture? The monitor Speakers are pointing towards the partition, And the partition was reflecting the sounds from the monitors STRAIGHT into the performers mic, causing me significant loss of allowable gain/volume.

After moving away the partition, the system works far better.

So the tip is, speaker placement plays a large role in minimising feedback. Do not hesitate in taking remedial steps where possible.

Time – Lack of it

Posted by chanxj on 15 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

For now i’m rushing out school assignments, so any updates here will be minimal for a few weeks. Once i am free, I will write a little about my Imagine Cup Journey other than day 1 :)

The reason for lack of updates in Paris was actually due to a packed schedule, and the internet not working when I wanted it to.

Imagine Cup – Paris Pictures

Posted by chanxj on 12 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: France, Imagine Cup, Photography, Singapore Polytechnic

We didn’t place top 3 sadly but well we were already top 6.On a lighter note, Singapore placed 1st in the embedded design Category (Clap clap clap clap clap). Congrats to team Trail Blazers from Nayang Polytechnic. I wonder where are the press? Its not easy to place first in such a international contest :)

Team Mama Gaia from Temasek Polytechnic was placed top 12 and that was also a commendable result considering the amount of opponents and they were up againsts were largely university students.

I would also like to congratulate all the teams in the photography category due to the fact that their work for the finals were all Top notch (ok except for 1 team which i didn’t particularly liked the work), and I would say everybody has been a winner. I especially liked the work of the 2 croatian teams.

Pictures of the whole journey would be here @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/25035085@N07/sets/72157606106641727 I would update if anyone else like Soon Bing posts up photos.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank everyone who has supported us on this journey.

Cheers

Singapore Awards Ceremony

Today, Soon Bing and I would be flying off to Paris, France to compete in the Imagine Cup Photography Category Finals together with our mentor Leon Chua. I would like to take this chance to thank everybody who have been supportive of us, especially our Lecturer, Mdm Choo who has been helping us all this while whenever we have met with problems and we wouldn’t be there if she did not suggest we enter in this category. I would also like to specially thank all my family members for rendering soooooooooo much help.

Don’t fret, we will do our best over there and make all of you, our valuable supporters proud. I don’t think we’ll do badly anyway, as the worse we can get is 6th place in the world(our target is first) :)

I will try to find time to update this blog over in Paris. So stay tune.
